Jesus is Never Overwhelmed

During His earthly ministry, Jesus was afflicted with the same weakness that besets us. When starved and tempted in the desert, He was hungry; when travelling through Samaria, He sat down at the well because of weariness; when praying in Gethsemane, his soul was “very sorrowful, even to death.” The cruel torture of the cross broke His body and killed Him. But His weakness, unlike mine, was voluntary: “No one takes my life from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again.” He was afflicted, but never overwhelmed. He willingly yielded up His spirit in death just as He had done in life, and now death no longer has dominion over Him. There is no force in heaven or on earth than can overwhelm His surpassing greatness; though His enemies assemble as the sand of the sea, He will wash them away with terrors as in an instant. And although my strength is limited, His is not. Even if I find myself at the very gates of hell, His power will overcome: “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.” “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
